Wildacres Retreat Wildacres Lodge

Wildacres 2020 Season Update

Dear Wildacres Community,

Since March, the question we ask – and are asked – on a daily basis is “When will Wildacres open?” As with all things COVID 19 related, it has been a prevailing topic of conversation with our staff, guests, residents, board members and within the larger Wildacres community. After much thoughtful discussion, we have made the decision not to open for the remainder of the 2020 season. Our hope is that by next spring there will be a greater understanding of the virus, as well as established health and safety practices we can then incorporate at Wildacres to keep our community safe.

Now more than ever, each of us must take steps beyond those we are typically required to take, in the interest of personal and global self-care. At Wildacres, we feel strongly that it is our responsibility to make well-considered decisions around hosting guests, in order to keep both our guests and staff members safe and at the same time respect and preserve our long history of service, individual growth, and community learning. Staff members still at work on the mountain will take the next few weeks to close down the property as we normally would in the fall and they will then be furloughed until early 2021. Several of our groups as well as individual community members have asked about sending donations for our furloughed staff as most of them have been out of work since March. Such generosity has meant so much to our staff members and they appreciate being thought of at a time like this more than can be articulated. Should groups or individuals wish to donate to the Wildacres’ staff fund, they may do so by sending a check made out to Wildacres with a memo line of “Staff Donation” to Wildacres Retreat at PO Box 280, Little Switzerland, NC  28749. Alternatively, donations can be made through the Wildacres PayPal link on our website. Please add that it is a staff donation in the notes/message section. We will make sure staff donations are distributed amongst all furloughed staff.

You are welcome to call or email us here at Wildacres if you have any questions or just want to stay in touch. The more we can remain connected even in small ways, the stronger we will be when we are all back on the mountain together. We will reach out to our group leaders by phone in the coming days to be sure this message is received by all in Wildacres community. We will also be in touch in the fall to talk about scheduling your group for the 2021 season.

Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones and know each of us here at Wildacres are thinking of you. We will look forward to having guests and residents back on the mountain for the 2021 season.

With Gratitude,
Wendy Burns, Resident Manager
