Wildacres Workshop Highlights

John Mack Oboe Camp Marks their
35th Anniversary with Glider Dedication

Writers read from their work at the conference center.

Ninety-three people, including John Mack's family and grandchildren were here to enjoy JMOC this year and witness the dedication of the teak glider that now resides on the patio near the canteen. Also in attendance was Pat Nott, longtime director of the camp as well as Joe Robinson, who brought the first music masterclass to Wildacres. He was the principal oboist for the New York Philharmonic from 1978-2005. He also taught two oboe masterclasses while he was here this summer.

Ceci Lagarenne who attended the camp from 1983 to 2005 organized the purchase of the glider. Her efforts raised funds for the purchase and additional funds were raised for Oboe Camp scholarships. Many long-time alumni attended this event.

Discovery Place Weekend 2011

With guidance from the Discovery Place staff, participants immersed themselves in the beauty and nature of the Blue Ridge Mountains and spent time learning about the region from expert naturalists. The Charlotte-based hands-on science museum provided a woderful program for parents, children and individuals, including hiking, birding and stargazing.

A presentation about owls in recovery was given by the trainers from Grandfather Mountain. In another presentation featuring regional wildlife, the brave participants touched or held a black snake!

Special 2011 guest speakers included Patrick McMillan, the host, co-creator and writer of the award-winning ETV nature program, EXPEDITIONS WITH PATRICK MCMILLAN, and Jennifer Pharr Davis, women's record holder for completing the Appalachain Trail (2,175 Miles) in 57 days, 8 hours and 35 minutes, in 2008
