Kumandi Drum and Dance Camp*

May 5 - 10



The spring 2009 event will be our 23rd camp. Drummers, dancers, singers and performing groups from communities all over the U.S. come together to experience and learn the high-energy and celebratory music, dance, and culture of West Africa. An optional drum-making workshop (additional cost) can provide you a finished African drum in a fun and fascinating day-and-a-half experience. The teaching staff includes up to twelve African and American instructors. Chuck Cogliandro, director of Kumandi Drums in Atlanta, organizes the event. The 128 participants include men, women and children, both professional musicians and absolute beginners and a full spectrum between. The event includes yoga, massage practitioners, energy healers, and an uplifting spiritual presence. The event has been full since mid-January, and there is currently a wait list to attend. The Saturday evening talent show performance and concert is open to the public. For more information and registration please contact KUMANDI.

Senior Scholars, founded in 1973, is an organization for seniors and retirees whose members meet weekly to hear a prominent speaker on interesting and diverse topics. Don’t let the “Scholars” title scare you. An academic degree is not required, only an interest in future learning.


 



Limestone College AWE Program

Achieving Writing Excellence (AWE) Core Faculty
Limestone College

This workshop is designed to foster writing instruction across the disciplines and instructional formats of Limestone College. During the 4-day workshop, the Limestone College AWE Core Faculty will create working definitions of writing in their disciplines, design writing intensive course syllabi and assignments, discuss responding to and assessing student writing, and build relationships with their colleagues.


This workshop is not open to the public.


Hickory Humanities Forum*

This is the 29th annual edition of the forum, is an offering of Lenoir-Rhyne University and its Lineberger Center for Cultural and Educational Renewal. It was begun in 1981 under the overall guidance of the late Sydney Harris, syndicated columnist and Great Books advocate, as an experience on the order of the Aspen Institutes. This year’s course is on selected readings from Abraham Lincoln.

Bardic Drawing Workshop

May 14 - 17



 

This intensive workshop will focus on drawing the face, with emphasis on studio practice, facial elements and form, the planar method of construction and the final development of an overall likeness by using defining planes. Actual drawing time will be divided into study and exercises with instruction, and labs in which you will work in a classic atelier style concentrating on the model's head and face, followed by reviews and discussion as a class.


 




Blue Ridge Center for Lifelong Learning

The Blue Ridge Center for Lifelong Learning is a membership based organization for individuals 50 years of age or older who can enjoy diverse opportunities for enrichment. The organization is part of the continuing education program of Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville. They have been stimulating minds since 1990 by offering courses on many subjects. The program at Wildacres covers a variety of programs including music, art, and history. The program is open to members of BRCLL and is full for this year. Be sure to visit our website.

Guided Imagery and Music Level II - ASU

ASU Training in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music

The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a music-centered depth approach to transformational therapy that uses selected sequences of classical music to support the generation of and movement through inner experiences. In GIM, the music serves as a catalyst and container for imagery allowing one to access and explore both the depths and the heights of the human experience. Appalachian State University offers all three levels of training in GIM for music therapists and other qualified mental health professionals. Ceramic Sculpture Workshop*

Melisa Cadell - Sculpting the Female Torso

The workshop will concentrate on completing a ¾ life size female torso. We will use simple slab techniques to build up quickly to capture mood. A special focus will be on facial features and emotional expression. Other topics will be covered – surface techniques & professional development. Please contactl Judy Mooney for more information.
