What is included in a Wildacres residency?

  • Wildacres residencies are provided at no charge to awardees.  Residents will stay in one of our three residency cabins.  The cabins are less than a half-mile walk or drive from the main area of the retreat.  Three meals per day are also provided free of charge as long as groups are at the retreat and dining hall is open. You will be notified prior to your residency if there will be no food service at any time in your stay.
  • Residents are responsible for their own transportation to and from the retreat, as well as while they are with us.  Wildacres is a remote location and public transportation is not available.

What are the cabins like?

  • Wildacres provides all bed linens (including comforters, blankets and pillows) and towels. You are always welcome to bring your own pillow, etc. if you prefer.
  • The cabins have ceiling fans for cooling in the summer and baseboard heaters for the early spring and late fall.  Amenities per cabin include one double bed, chairs, a full bath, kitchen and a worktable with a reading lamp. Two of our cabins have screened in porches and the third cabin has an attached deck. We do not provide Kleenex, complimentary toiletries or hair dryers in the cabins.
  • Each residency cabin is self-catering so residents have the option to prepare their own meals if they wish.  Each cabin is stocked with basic cooking and serving utensils.

When does my residency begin and end?

  • Check-in for your residency begins at 3pm on the Monday of your residency.  If you plan to arrive later than 5pm, please let us know ahead of time.  You will check-in at the main office when you arrive at the retreat.  For check-in you will meet with either the resident manager or front desk attendant who will go over information with you regarding the retreat and your stay.  You will receive a welcome packet and key to your cabin at that time.
  • Residents may check out as early in the morning as they wish on checkout day.  However, we ask that you check out no later than 10am on the Sunday at the end of your residence.  This allows our housekeeping staff to begin cleaning.

What should I bring with me?

  • Residents are responsible for providing any supplies and equipment they may need for their proposed residency project(s).  With the exception of potters needing access to kilns, or jewelers needing access to the lapidary studio, residents must rely on their own equipment, supplies and the space within their cabin during their residencies.
  • If you need to have supplies or program materials shipped to the Retreat, you may use our physical address: YOUR NAME c/o Wildacres Retreat, 1565 Wildacres Road, Little Switzerland, NC. 28749.  Both UPS and FedEx deliver directly to the retreat.   USPS does not deliver to our street address.  Please give us a call at the retreat to let us know to expect a package so it’s not refused.
  • The weather can be cool at night anytime during the season. In the spring and the fall, it can be quite chilly on a windy day. Bringing layers to accommodate the changes in temperature is a good idea.
  • Much of the property is hilly, and comfortable walking shoes will make a difference.  You do not necessarily need hiking boots.
  • Laundry facilities, groceries, beer/wine, and other services are available within a short drive of the retreat.  Otherwise, if you can’t live without it, we recommend you bring it with you.

Will there be WiFi and is there cell service?

  • WiFi is available on a limited basis. Wildacres is a true retreat, and we discourage the use of electronics as much as possible so that our guests can enjoy the quiet and solitude of the mountains and disconnect from everyday pressures.  Strong internet access is available in our North Lodge lobby, the Auditorium and Library, and in meeting spaces within our North and South Lodges.
  • Most cellphones work in the main area of the retreat although some areas have spotty service.  In case of emergency, if someone needs to reach you and your cellphone does not work, they should call (828) 756-4573, and the staff will get you a message. Please be sure they understand this is only for emergency calls, especially if the calls come in between 8 pm and 8 am. 

Can I charge my electric vehicle?

  • Wildacres does not currently have facilities to recharge guests’ electric vehicles.  The closest location is in Little Switzerland at Books and Beans, which is in the same building as the Switzerland Cafe.  Their number is 828.467.8107.  You may call them for more information.

What about food and beverage options?

  • Breakfast is at 8:00 am, lunch is at 12:30 pm and dinner is at 6:00 pm, although on check-in day dinner is at 6:30 pm to allow time for guests to arrive and settle into their rooms.
  • Meals are served family style with a salad bar available at lunch and dinner. Our food service staff can accommodate vegetarian and vegan preferences, as well as lactose/dairy intolerances and, to a certain degree, gluten-free requests.  If you have dietary restrictions or intolerances beyond those, it may be best to bring some food items along with you to supplement your meals.  If you have special dietary restrictions please let us know at check-in.We do not serve pork or shellfish at the retreat, and our cooks do not use MSG in any food preparation.
  • While alcohol is not available for sale at Wildacres, you are permitted to bring your own.  Several nearby stores sell beer and wine, and there are ABC (liquor) stores in Spruce Pine and Marion.
  • The Wildacres Canteen is located on the lower level of South Lodge. Our Canteen is a combination shop and community area and carries Wildacres gear such as fleece jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts, mugs, basic toiletries, and more, along with a selection of ice cream.  We also have a vending machine with snacks and soda, an ice machine and a microwave for guests to use.

My plans have changed.  Can I reschedule my residency?

  • Wildacres does not carry residencies over from year-to-year.  If you are unable to attend your awarded residency, please let us know as soon as possible, and you are welcome to reapply in future years.

May I bring a guest with me?

  • As the residencies are intended to be working retreats, spouses, partners, and other guests are not permitted.  Residents are not permitted to bring personal pets, emotional support animals, or therapy animals. 
  • There will be other residents with us during your week, and it will be up to your discretion if you wish to connect with them.  

Miscellaneous Details

  • Wildacres has numerous hiking trails both on the main property and throughout the larger property. You will get a trail map in your welcome packet.
  • We do not permit smoking or vaping indoors anywhere at the retreat.   We ask that guests wishing to smoke be aware of drifting smoke and stay away from locations where smoke can drift in open windows or doors.
